Advanced Imaging Technology

In addition, our Women's Center offers digital breast imaging, stereotactic breast biopsies, mammatone suction biopsies, and DEXA bone density scans.

Redmond Regional Medical Center is now using the Mammotome Breast Biopsy System, the highly efficient technology capable of acquiring multiple tissue specimens with only one tiny insertion.

Redmond Regional has been utilizing this new technology since early June 2011 and has had very successful results. The new Mammotome technology is minimally invasive compared to an open surgical biopsy and is a sutureless procedure. These features minimize the possibility of scarring or breast disfigurement characterizing more traditional procedures. Scar tissue from open biopsies can limit sensitivity of future mammograms.

The new procedure is not only patient friendly, but it also enables physicians to diagnose breast cancers at the earliest possible stage. The Mammotome System efficiently acquires multiple tissue specimens that are 8 times larger than those acquired through the traditional spring-loaded biopsy system. In addition, the new technology provides 3 times more reliability in diagnosing atypical ductal hyperplasia. The Mammotome System is extremely versatile, allowing for many different types of difficult breast lesions and delivery of various agents for patient management.

Mammotome Systems have performed tens of thousands of successful procedures across the country, and now Redmond Regional has brought the technology to the Northwest Georgia area. The Mammotome technology is found in the easily accessible Redmond Regional Women's Center, which has its own entrance separate from that of the main hospital for added privacy and convenience.

The DEXA scan bone densitometer is highly sensitive technology that helps identify patients with a risk of bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, at a much earlier stage than the conventional x-ray systems.

Osteoporosis affects more than 28 million Americans, 80 percent of whom are women. The disorder results in more than one million hip, spine, and wrist fractures annually. With the DEXA scan bone densitometer, weakness in the bone can be detected to avoid such injuries.
