Redmond Regional Medical Center

Women's Services

The Women's Center at Redmond Regional Medical Center offers a variety of services for women in Rome, Northwest Georgia, and the surrounding communities. It's designed for your privacy and convenience, with its own entrance separate from that of the main hospital. We want you to feel the comfort of home while having the most advanced technology at your fingertips.

Approximately 4,600 women in Georgia are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Georgia and accounts for nearly 30% of all cancer cases and 18% of all cancer deaths. More than 90% of breast cancer patients do not have a family history of the disease. If detected early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 95%. Women should have a clinical breast exam every three years beginning at age 20, and a mammogram plus a clinical breast exam annually beginning at age 40. All women should perform monthly self-examinations after age 20. Men are also at risk. In the U.S., roughly 1,500 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, many at later stages since men are less likely to report symptoms.

The Women's Center is just one more way Redmond Regional serves the community.

Services Include:

Digital Screening Mammograms - Routine mammograms are conducted as a screening for breast cancer in women without current breast symptoms. They are also used as a baseline comparison test for future breast screenings. We are proud to offer same day and next day mammograms!

A mammogram is a study of the breast tissue, usually consisting of two X-rays of each breast. Compression is used to flatten the breast for better visualization of the anatomy and any potential abnormality. Compression allows the use of a lower X-ray dose because it creates a thinner amount of breast tissue to be imaged.

The following procedures require a physician's order. If your doctor recommends one of these procedures, you may request to be sent to the Redmond Women's Center.

Digital Diagnostic Mammograms - These take a closer look at the breast to magnify areas that need closer surveillance to get the most accurate images.

Dexascan Bone Density Tests - The Women's Center also offers bone densitometry/ DEXA scans to determine bone mineral or bone strength. Osteoporosis is a disease that depletes the minerals from our bones, making them brittle, weak and easy to break. Bone densitometry allows for earlier detection of the demineralization process as compared to conventional x-rays.

MRI Procedures - Magnetic Resonance Imaging is used to image lesions within the breast. We also have the capability to perform MRI guided biopsies.

Ultrasound Procedures - Ultrasound technology is utilized to assess and diagnose disease processes. We have the capacity to perform same day needle biopsies as well as pelvic ultrasonography when needed.

Stereotactic Needle Biopsy - This cutting edge technology is used to biopsy breast lesions through the assistance of x-ray guided instruments. In this procedure, a small sampling of the suspicious area is taken and sent to the lab for evaluation.
