Understanding Diabetes in Your Body

The glucose (sugar) in your body comes from the food you eat — and all of your body’s cells need it for energy. Insulin is the hormone that helps move the glucose through your bloodstream to your cells. When you have diabetes, your body either does not make insulin, or it makes insulin but cannot use it properly. Left untreated, diabetes can result in damage to your blood vessels, nerve endings and organs, leading to long-term complications.
