Diabetes Pills & Insulin

About Diabetes Pills
Diabetes pills are sometimes used by people with type 2 diabetes, although the main treatment for type 2 diabetes is meal planning and exercise. Diabetes pills are often used to supplement a treatment plan when diet and exercise alone can't keep your blood glucose controlled. Sometimes different pills are combined with each other or combined with insulin to better control your blood glucose. Your physician may stop your medication if you lose weight and no longer need the medication, or if you become pregnant.

Keep in mind that diabetes pills are not insulin, which is a medication that cannot be given by mouth.

About Insulin
All people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin since their pancreas no longer makes insulin. Women with gestational diabetes, as well as some people with type 2 diabetes may also need insulin. Insulin lowers your blood glucose by moving glucose from the blood stream in the body cells.

Unlike diabetes pills, insulin cannot be taken by mouth and must be taken in the form of an injection. This is insulin injection is typically made into fat tissue just below the skin. There are four main sites that can be used for injecting insulin: Abdomen - the preferred site, Back of the Arm, Front and Upper Outside of the Thigh, and Upper and Outside part of the Buttocks.

Diabetes has two forms.
